SIPPO and FENIP organized, on November 30, 2020, a videoconference on the challenges of the sustainability of the Moroccan fish sector, for the benefit all actors in this sector. Animated by SIPPO Expert Lahsen Ababouch, the event was attended by the National Institute for Fisheries Research, and the Maritime Fisheries Department.
The conference did an overall evaluation of the situation:
* the fisheries sector in its international, regional and national context,
* current initiatives making sustainability an instrument of access to lucrative global markets, their strengths and limitations, with a focus on the platform under construction the Seafood MAP (https://www.ourgssi.org/seafood-map/site )
* challenges and opportunities for the Moroccan fisheries sector.
This conference was the opportunity to initiate a reflection of the participants on a vision and a strategic framework around the full restoration and consolidation of the productive and competitive capacities of the fishing sector in Morocco by 2030.
Thus, the speakers took turns exposing their views. They highlighted the importance of sensitizing companies on sustainability, and of the establishment of a brand image and a distinctive sign recognized by the Moroccan fishing industry through the label “Moroccan Seafood”. The also promoted the implementation of a digitalization strategy for the sector to adapt to changes in the international market.
According to the different stakeholder in the sector, the sustainability of the resource is considered vital and is at the heart of the national strategy. Despite the covid-19 pandemic the sector has shown some resilience. Also, the participants took stock of the fisheries research projects in the fisheries sector resulting from the sector's problems, the successes of fisheries development plans and marine protected area projects, and the progress made in MSC certification.
At the end of the conference, the operators of the sector recommended the operationalization of the one-stop-shop for exports and dematerialization which will make it possible to gain in competitiveness while eradicating the carbon footprint, and the establishment of an energy efficiency strategy to reduce production costs while respecting the environment.
Further innovation opportunities were mentioned in both products and processes, and the development of waste-free production cycles, the modernization of fishing boats and fishing techniques, the establishment of a programme contract, the creation of a maritime credit to finance the sector, and the need to add further values which should translate into the creation of more jobs, added value in exports and local consumption.
