Gerber has worked in the service of the Federal Government since 1973. His posts have included Head of the Economic, Financial and Commercial Office of the Swiss Embassy in Washington, Executive Director in the World Bank Group and Director of the Federal Office for Refugees (now: Federal Office for Migration) in the Federal Department of Justice and Police.
