After postings in Bern, Lagos and Geneva he was transferred to the Embassy in Washington in 1993. In 1994 he was appointed Deputy Secretary General of the Swiss Department of Foreign Affairs by the Swiss Federal Council and in 1996 Chief of the Task Force «Switzerland – Second World War». In 1999 Borer-Fielding was appointed Swiss Ambassador in Germany. In April 2002 he left government service.
